The Environmental Education Program in Bregenz, Austria, has been developed for teachers, educators and persons interested in comparing the environment in which they live with Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Lake Constance, the summits of the Swiss mountains, and the gentle rolling hills of Southern Germany provide the natural geographic borders for Bregenz. It lies just a few miles from the German and Swiss borders, which makes it an excellent place for exploring the historical, ecological and cultural aspects of Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Green space has been designed into the city plan, with walking paths through Bregenzer-wald, a wooded area that represents diversity in both plants and wildlife.
Bregenz provides the home base for the program because of its strategic location between Germany and Switzerland. It is a medium-sized town and is small enough to allow students to get to know the town and its people. Bregenz contains shops, churches, the Old City and natural areas, all in an inviting environment that encourages one to learn and explore.
The program will last 15 days. While in Bregenz, the Institute will sponsor numerous opportunities to visit important natural, cultural and historical sites in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. These excursions will provide participants with active, hands-on experiences to assist in assessment and comparisons of environmental education and the associated values, ethics and responsible human actions that are a part of these cultures.
