KIIS hosts new Art Exhibits from Mexico PDF Print E-mail

Kentucky Institute for International Studies is pleased to announce the arrival of two new exhibitions to Kentucky for the Fall of 2010 and Spring 2011. The exhibitions, made possible by an agreement between KIIS and the Ministry of Culture of Michoacan, represent the third exchange of art and culture from Mexico offered to the KIIS community.

The first exhibition, “El Grabado Mexicano,” or “Mexican Engravings,” portrays a visual history of Mexico’s struggle for independence. The traditional Mexican art media of woodcuts and engravings depict scenes from historic landmarks and time periods. For the first time they have been brought together to mark the bi-centennial celebration of the independence of Mexico.  View the link below to see the images contained in this exhibition.

The second exhibition, “Derechos en Tierra Ajena” (“Rights in a Foreign Land”), coordinated by Araceli Calderón Gonzáles, is a moving collection of testimonies from women who have emigrated from Mexico to the United States. This collection of personal stories and accompanying paintings narrates the struggle and fear that these women faced, as women, as wives, and as Mexican immigrants. The second link below contains the written presentation in both Spanish and English. The prologue was written by Mexico’s foremost female author, Elena Poniatowska.
